How do we End the Demand?
I believe that learning the facts, supporting those in the fight against child trafficking and getting trained on the topic can help end the demand. It takes bravery to learn about this heart-wrenching truth...and the kids are counting on us.
The Facts
There is no such thing as child prostitution or child pornography because children cannot give consent, according to S haron Cooper MD, which Connect Safely.A more fitting term is child abuse and child abuse images.
Human trafficking is defined as forcing, fooling, or frightening someone into performing labor or sex acts for profit and it is estimated that about 40.3 million victims are enslaved worldwide ( Project No Rest ).
Traffickers groom a victim which leads to the “breaking in process.” Some grooming methods of traffickers can parallel the child abuser, especially since child sexual abuse includes both physical contact and non-physical contact, such as exposing a child to pornography. Grooming is when an abuser/trafficker gradually draws a victim into a sexual relationship with special attention, outings, gifts, isolating the child, filling the child’s unmet needs or roles in the family, treating the child as older, crossing physical boundaries, and using secrecy, blame, and threats to maintain control. Patrick Crough, author of The Serpent Among Us , notes five predatory phases including trust, courtship, seduction, offending and control.
Child sex trafficking is a world-wide problem and an "in our own backyard" problem as well. I live in North Carolina, which is among the top 10 states for human trafficking. WRAL posted an article stating that the geographic location of North Carolina contributes, in part, to the high number of trafficked victims since the center of the triangle is surrounded by Washington D.C., Charlotte and Atlanta, which are all hubs for human trafficking. Also, the state also intersects several major interstates, which facilitate sex and labor trafficking. The post goes on to say that in the past ten years, North Carolina has identified nearly 2,700 victims in the state.

Get Training
One resource for training is my friend, Jan Edwards, President of Paving the Way Foundation. She has trained over 14,000 children, teens, young adults and community members since January of 2017. They start with an Award Winning film, Trapped in the Trade, to disrupt what people think they 'know' about human trafficking. After the film they engage the audience in 'What if' scenarios and have them do the critical thinking, empowering them to prevent our children from being lured into this tragic life .
Students learn:
- What is human trafficking and exploitation
- Grooming and Recruitment tactics used
- Apps and games where traffickers use
- Signs of trafficking
- Actions to take to prevent it
How can you join this fight?
Share the facts with a Say "NO!" and TELL! book?
Support one of about 2000 anti-human trafficking organizations world-wide?
Get training about anit-trafficking education and prevention?
Whether your next step is big or small to help fight child sex trafficking, it is significant! Your action can help answer a child's desperate prayer for deliverance from slavery...or help a child avoid it.
